“It’s a place of nobodies, but you get to be a somebody,” says a college student in trying to explain why he’s reluctant to leave “the only ugly town in Vermont.” It’s true Rutland lacks the touristy charm of most Vermont towns. With 30 houses in foreclosure and few available jobs the residents of Rutland had every reason to just give up and move away. But as writer-director Art Jones demonstrates in this delightfully upbeat documentary, Rutlanders took charge of their own destiny by joining together and coming up with projects that would boost the local economy. As further proof of their community spirit, a surprising number of them participated in a Red Cross Blood Drive.
This screening will be followed by a Panel Discussion with Art Jones and regional community activists.
